What to see in Chiapas?

• Archaeological Chiapas: As we said above, it is a state rich in everything that has to do with the Mayan culture. Here, you can find descendants of this indigenous ethnic group, and admire one of the most abundant ecological reserves.

Palenque is one of the most famous places worldwide and is a must-visit. Here, it is necessary to be accompanied by an expert guide because this region is enveloped by rivers and waterfalls such as Agua Azul and Misol-Ha. Palenque's beauty is so immaculate and rooted in history that it was deemed a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987.

Another archaeological site you have surely heard about is Bonampak. It is located in the most central area of the Lacandon jungle and has so much history attached, and to witness this, make sure to take a walk between the Great Plaza and the Acropolis.

• Main cities tour: Chiapas has many amazing cities to explore, but we recommend that you travel to San Cristobal de las Casas, a place surrounded by mountains, a picturesque zocalo also known as the main square, and houses with Roman-style tiles. You can also take a tour of Tuxtla Gutierrez, which is the heart of the state. Here, the atmosphere is so vibrant as you will find music, dancing and bright colours. Witness dancers in colourful attire swaying to the rhythm of the marimba, a fascinating sight as you walk through its narrow streets.

Tuxtla was one of the headquarters during the Revolution, so you will find different busts and monuments of historical personalities. For this type of tour, ensure that you have several days of vacation because these tours are organized for a minimum of 3 days and up to 7 days, including lodging and local transportation.

• Sumidero Canyon and the Lacandon Jungle: you cannot leave Chiapas without visiting these two great tourist destinations in the southern part of Mexico. To access the canyon, we will take you by boat from Cahuaré or Chiapa de Corzo where you will witness a majestic view of its rocky walls that are over 70 million years old. The spectacular view will leave you mesmerized and feel so small compared to the colossal walls.

You have to visit the Lacandon jungle, a site that is the largest surviving tropical wilderness area. Within the area is the famous Bonampak archaeological zone and the largest eco-tourism centres such as Las Guacamayas and Las Nubes. If you have an adventurous side, this will be the ideal place to practice a little kayaking, rappelling or zip-lining.

• Indigenous village tour: We will take you to visit the oldest villages in the state, where pre-Hispanic customs and traditions are still in practice. In San Juan Chamula, they base their religion and politics on the combination of Catholicism and Mayan beliefs. You will also visit places where you will find Shamans performing cleansing and other rituals. We will also take you to the town of Zinacantán, where the Tzotzil Indians live and where you will be able to observe how they manufacture backstrap looms.
